What is Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be)?


Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be), also known as Extremely High Throughput (EHT), is the seventh generation of Wi-Fi technology that operate in the 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz bands, based on Wi-Fi 6E in the 6GHz band. The goal of Wi-Fi 7 is to deliver blazing-fast speeds to every device with greater efficiency. WiFi 7 unleashes the full potential of the 6 GHz band, doubling the bandwidth of its predecessor by increasing the channel bandwidth from 160MHz to 320MHz, enabling more data to be transmitted simultaneously, providing higher throughput and faster data transfer speeds. This will enable users to download and upload large files faster, watch HD videos smoothly and enjoy a more stable Internet connection.

Multi-RU

In Wi-Fi 6, a single STA can only use a single RU (Resource Unit), which limits the flexibility of spectrum resource scheduling. Wi-Fi 7 breaks through this limitati on by allowing a single STA to occupy multiple RUs at the same time, and to combine different RUs to improve transmission efficiency.

Preamble Puncturing

Previously, busy channel data could only be sent through the main channel. Wi-Fi 7 utilizes Spectrum Puncturing technology to reduce interference from other devices in the same frequency band. By dividing the spectrum into temporal and spatial windows, signal conflicts with other devices can be avoided, providing clearer communication signals and more reliable connection quality.

Higher Speed, Lower Latency

Multi-Link Operation (MLO)

Traditional WiFi devices use a single link to transmit data. In order to more effectively integrate the use of spectrum resources, WiFi 7 introduces Multi-Link Operation (MLO) technology, which allows devices to transmit and receive data on multiple channels simultaneously, allowing for multi-link aggregation or multi-link switching and co-operation, avoiding the congestion and interference problems that can occur on a single channel, thus providing higher throughput, lower latency, and more stable wireless connectivity.

Multi-AP Collaboration

In the existing published Wi-Fi protocols, more involved in a single AP itself how to achieve higher throughput, more access, Wi-Fi 7 not only focus on the performance and reliability of the AP itself to improve, but also pay attention to more reasonable resource allocation between multiple APs to achieve the optimal performance of the entire network. Currently, there are four key discussion directions, namely, Coordinated Spatial Reuse (CSR), Joint Transmission (JXT), Coordinated Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (C-OFDMA), and Coordinated Beamforming (CBF).
